Steel Barbecue in Masonry: Insulation and Movement

Vitcas ceramic fibre insulation boards

The steel grill and the surrounding wall do not behave identically when heated. The enclosure should take into account the requirements of the insert, its support, and access for maintenance. Before filling the space between the parts, determine which areas are supports and which serve other purposes.

Start with the insert instructions

Mark the allowed support points and required spaces. Show the ventilation openings and access to removable elements. Do not close them accidentally just because the front of the enclosure will look more even.

Check the layout without fire, with the equipment intended for operation. The edge or grate should not catch on the finish. The grill documentation also specifies the installation conditions, which the heat-resistant mortar alone does not change.

Choose insulation according to the cross-section

Ceramic fibre board constitutes a rigid format of insulation. ceramic fibre blanket allows for creating appropriate flexible layers. Selection depends on the location, material retention, and temperature; a similar fibre name does not imply the same function in the installation.

Maintain the fibre protection method and the thickness specified in the design. Accidentally packing the blanket into any hole does not confirm the parameters of the complete joint. Do not also transfer weight to the insulation that was not intended for the layer.

Separate masonry from contact with metal

Outdoor Oven Cement is used for the described external fire-resistant connections. Sealing each edge of the steel insert with it may change the required movement and access. Each joint should have a defined function.

Before covering, photograph the supports, insulation, and remaining spaces. Keep the insert instructions together with a description of the products used. In the event of later deformation or cracking, this will allow the assessment of a specific detail, instead of adding material without knowledge of the actual installation of the barbecue.
